Movements

We have combined varied terms to make it easier to learn combinations of terms eg, the type, target and direction of a strike. This is how commands are delivered in a class. This is an alphabetic list. Look up each individual term  to understand its root meaning.

ASHI
Foot, as in Neko Ashi, Tsugi Ashi, Sagi Ashi or the cat foot stance, shuffle foot manoeuvre, or the crane foot form

ASHI BARAI
Foot sweep using

ASHI SABAKI
Shifting of the feet

AWASE KUMITE
Slow controlled sparring where partners combine giving and receiving

CHUSHIN
Pivoting; specific hip thrust for added power in the delivery of a thrusting strike

CHUSHIN HIKE TSUKI
Pivoting hip with thrusting punch, immediately recovering to recoiled position alongside the body and original stance; a technique designed for coordination, mobility and speed

CHUSHIN TOME TSUKI
Pivoting hip with thrusting punch remaining extended, executed from the lowered squatting stance

HIKI
Withdraw; an action of immediate recovery on executed strikes or kicks for repeated delivery of same technique

HIKI AYUMI ASHI
Pull back the leading foot and step out with the back foot to reach the desired distance; manoeuvring stance used in the advance level of training

IDO
Manoeuveres

GOJU
Hard and soft; also number fifty (50) when counting in Japanese

KIHON KUMITE
Basic sparring

KUMITE
Sparring

JIYU KUMITE
Hard and fast controlled free style fighting

JYU or JU
Soft as in Goju, Ju being the soft; also the number ten (10) when counting in Japanese

KYU
Refers to grade levels below black belt, e.g. 10th kyu, 9th kyu, 8th kyu, etc.

KYU JUDO
Ninety degree (90°) direction as in 90 degree lower stance

OTOSHI
Dropping downward or descending applying to an elbow strike or kick

SABAKI

SANBON KUMITE
A three step offence and defense basic sparring sequence

SANCHIN DACHI IDO
Manoeuvring drill associated with the three-point stance Sanchin Dachi

SHOMEN
Forward direction or frontal area

SHUHO
Four way cross pattern manoeuvering or four-corner basic technique drills

SHUHO IDO
Basic manoeuvres using a four way cross pattern

SOTO
Outward – used in describing blocks eg. Soto uke, Hiza uke

SURI ASHI
Sliding step using the back foot to slide up as the front foot steps forward

SURI ASHI DACHI
The drag foot stance with a forceful rush forward to offset the opponents balance

TAI SABAKI
Body shifting or repositioning – tai means body – moving the body to avoid contact

TSUGI ASHI
An advancing shuffling step using the back foot to shuffle forward with the front foot, stepping out to reach the required distance

USHIRO
Behind or to the rear, as in direction

YAKUSOKU KUMITE
Pre-arranged sparring or arranged fighting exercise

YONJUGODO
45° angle facing the front –  literal meaning is Yon Ju — 40, Go — 5, Do — way

YOKO
Side, as a position of direction in which one delivers a technique

YOKO SABAKI
Side moving to avoid being struck and assist in deflection

YORI ASHI
Leading foot shuffle or dragging step, as in the cat stance when stepping out with the heel and ball footwork

YON HON KUMITE
Four point pre-arranged sparring

YUMIBARI
Archers form signified by its low squatting stance perpendicular to the front, with one hand raised at head level and other lowered and adjacent to the forward leg
